Between Sleeping and Waking … for piano solo, narrates the course of a relationship. Beginning with reflection, we return to the first meeting of a man and a woman as they fall madly in love before negotiating the ups and downs of a tumultuous relationship. Both intimate and humorous, specially selected pieces were performed by the composer as part of secret southbank in a final concert at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 2015 before its 2 year closure for renovation. Between Sleeping and Waking… received its full premiere in 2016 at All Saints, Tudeley, with Caddick performing the work surrounded by Marc Chagall’s beautiful stained glass windows.
Between Sleeping and Waking... has received subsequent performances at WhitLit 2015 to accompany screenings of clips by Georges Melies in a tiny cinema for one, at the POW! 2018 festival to mark the centenary year of the first British women gaining the right to vote and featured on both BBC 3's Late Junction and Resonance FM, run by the London Musicians’ Collective.
Audience Response
To Between Sleeping and Waking
Helen's evocative piano playing gives rise to an innocent quietness. 'On a Summer's Evening' is a lovely piece, reminiscent of period drawing rooms. 'Love' meanwhile, is a touch darker and thoroughly more mature in its emphatic chords.
- The Musician Autumn 2015
Between sleeping and waking ...marvellous, perfect in every way...so emotive and delicate and at the same time so assured and strong. I loved every single piece.'- Wendy Robinson
